69503-01 - Seminar: An Introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis: Theoretical Foundations and Hands-on Applications 1 KP

Inhalt The workshop will be given by Prof. Dr. Renato Frey, Cognitive and Behavioral Decision Research, Dept. of Psychology, University of Zurich.

Bayesian data analysis is increasingly used in psychology to estimate model parameters and test hypotheses of interest. But how does this statistical framework differ from what is arguably still the status quo in psychological science, namely, frequentist statistics? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Bayesian methods? And, importantly, how can Bayesian data analysis readily be em-ployed to address empirical research questions? This course will provide answers to all of these questions and is organized as follows: First, we will discuss the basic concepts underlying different estimation methods (i.e., frequentist vs. Bayesian estimation), with the goal that all participants will develop a basic intuition and understanding of the "Bayesian machinery" – and simultaneously safeguard them-selves from wrong interpretations of frequentist statistics. Second, we will transfer this basic knowledge into hands-on applications using R, focusing on common statistical procedures in psycho-logical science (i.e., estimation of parameters such as group differences and regressions coefficients; hypothesis testing). In this second part, the course participants will have the opportunity to work on an applied problem from their own research.
Lernziele 1. To have a basic intuition and understanding of the theoretical foundations of Bayesian data analysis.
2. To be able to implement specific Bayesian methods to address empirical research questions using R.

Bemerkungen The workshop is offered by the doctoral program Health & Interventions (HI-PSY) and counts towards the research method curriculum area of the PhD program HI-PSY.

Places will be given according to this selection criteria:
1) PhD students from the doctoral program HI-PSY
2) PhD students of other specializations of the Faculty of Psychology
3) PhD students of other faculties of the University of Basel

HI-PSY rules for withdrawal, absence, or partial course attendance:
If you cannot attend a workshop that you have signed up for, please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch. This will allow other PhD students interested in the course to move up from the waiting list. After the university’s official registration period has ended, cancelled course will be assessed with NE. Course registrations can be cancelled until one week before the workshops begins. In the case of late cancellations, participants will not be considered for course registration in the next three months of the lecture periods and will be removed from the registration list of any course they have signed up during these three upcoming months of the lecture periods.

If an urgent, unforeseeable, or inevitable event before or during the course prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch within two days of the workshop and without being prompted. The program director decides on the approval of the withdrawal request.
ECTS-points are awarded only for 100% course attendance.

PhD students who are not part of the doctoral program HI-PSY please apply for admission to the workshop before course registration by sending an e-mail to the program director Prof. Dr. Jens Gaab (jens.gaab@unibas.ch).
