45001-02 - Seminar: Business, Law and Economic Policy 6 CP

Content The target is to give master students an opportunity to write an own paper in English (that may be considered to be a first step towards the master’s thesis), to present the conclusions to an international audience of researchers at Georgetown University and New York University and discuss the results.
Learning objectives Students will deepen their knowledge by:
• writing an original scientific paper on an interesting topic that may serve as a first step to a Master's thesis
• presenting the most important findings to a demanding audience in English in the U.S.
Bibliography Students identify the relevant literature under the supervision of Prof. Rolf Weder (University of Basel) and Prof. Jeffrey Macher (Georgetown University).

Admission requirements Students have to be enrolled in one of the master programs at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel (exceptions are possible, for example for PhD students).

Enrollment is necessary in the fall semester (writing the paper) AND the spring semester (presentation of the paper).
Course application The seminar is offered as an annual course. Registration is only possible for the students who were successfully admitted to the seminar in the autumn semester 2023 and handed in a seminar paper latest by 30 November 2023.

Assessment details The final grade is based on the following weights (seminar in February 2024):
- seminar paper: 60%
- presentation: 30%
- discussion as well as the overall contribution in the seminar: 10%.
