27247-01 - Lecture: Computational Biology II: Sequence Modeling and Analysis 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Mihaela Zavolan (mihaela.zavolan@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course will introduce students to fundamental problems in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology such as:
- Evolution: Mathematical models for the evolution of DNA sequences.
- Alignment and Phylogeny reconstruction: inferring evolutionary relationships between sequences.
- Functional annotation: Finding genes and regulatory sequences in fully sequenced genomes.
- Families of coding sequences: Hidden Markov models of protein domains
- Gene expression networks: Inferring regulatory factors driving gene expression.
Students should have a good understanding of calculus, linear algebra, combinatorics and algorithms and should be familiar with concepts of molecular biology.
Learning objectives Students learn about the basic problem domain of bioinformatics as well as a wide range of algorithms for sequence analysis. They will learn about the commonly used languages of bioinformatics (mostly Python) and will implement basic bioinformatics algorithms.
