71165-01 - Seminar: Peacebuilding in a Shifting World: Peace Research and Practice 3 CP

Content Swisspeace, the Department of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Political Science are hosting a series of talks open to students and all other interested parties. In the beginning of the seminar, we will host six scholars to present findings from recent peace research, presenting recently published books and articles, and to discuss the state of the field. The second half of the seminar is devoted to students preparing research plans for their individual projects, either Master theses or seminar papers.
To gain credit, you are expected to attend the sessions in person at the University of Basel
Learning objectives Participants will be introduced to the latest books and papers in peace research and have the opportunity to discuss these with leading peace researchers from around the world.

Students taking the seminar will:
1) Be able to summarise recently published findings and their implications for the study of peace and conflict research
2) Be able to critically reflect on and discuss presentations with authors.
3) Reflect on the current state of peace research and practice.
4) Prepare a research plan linked to peace and conflict research.
Bibliography Students will be asked to read the presenters' work ahead of the talk and come prepared for the talk. The bibliography will be shared at the beginning of the seminar.
Comments Attention:
All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science with the beginning of the FS20 semester.
Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass.
The number of participants will be limited. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Priority will be given to students of Political Science.
