15729-01 - Lecture: Distributed Information Systems 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Heiko Schuldt (heiko.schuldt@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Many applications are more and more facing large volumes of data which need to be managed, accessed, and processed in an efficient way. From the data management point of view, this has led to a radical shift from centralized, monolithic database systems towards distributed information systems. This is especially (but not only) the case in Data Sciece and Data Analytics, where Distributed Data Management and Distributed Information Systems are essential and integral parts of the entire data processing pipeline. For these distributed information systems, it is of utmost importance i.) to have sophisticated mechanisms and protocols for coordinating and accessing distributed resources (e.g., distributed databases) and ii.) to be based on appropriate infrastructures which support distributed applications. The goal of this course is to understand the basic problems of distributed information systems, to become familiar with the different architecture paradigms, and to practically experiment with some selected systems. The course includes lectures, mandatory practical exercises with some of the systems and infrastructures that are discussed, and a small project.
Learning objectives The goal of this course is to understand the basic principles of distributed information systems, to become familiar with the different architecture paradigms, and to practically experiment with some selected systems.
Bibliography Will be announced in the course.
Comments Target Audience: Students in the Master Programs Computer Science and Data Science.
